VARIATIONS BY KATIE HIMS

Monaghan Youth Theatre is thrilled to be participating in Connections 2019 which is a youth theatre festival run by the National Theatre of London. Each year the National Theatre commissions 10 new plays for young people to perform, bringing together some of the most exciting writers with the theatre makers of tomorrow. After two home performances in the Garage the company will travel to the Lyric Theatre, Belfast to perform with 11 other youth theatres from across Ireland.

Youth theatre members have fallen in love with the play and are extremely excited to bring the show to local audiences. Thirteen-year-old Alice wishes her life was completely different. She wakes up one morning to find that her life IS different. In fact, it’s so different that all she wants to do is get back to normality. But how does she do that?

“I wanted to write a play about that feeling we can all have, that we wish our life were different. Particularly when it comes to our families. I also love stories about parallel universes and plays that repeat themselves. I wondered “What if a young girl wakes up repeatedly to all the various families she might have had?” Katie Hims, Playwright. A play about family, string theory and breakfast.
